My work as Lead Game Designer and Programmer
Emily’s Friend is my first student game produced in 6 months along side my 3rd year of digital art licence. I was game designer and programmer in a team of 5 students, myself included.
We operated on the basis of 1 marketing artist, 1 graphic artist/ composer, 1 FX artist, 1 modeler/programmer and 1 programmer/ GD.
My job as game designer and programmer was to imagine an experience on the theme of the environment. We decided to create a life system where Emily would “heal” next to trees and “get sad” if she got too close to pollution. As game designer, I also implemented all our artists’ creations.
As my first big project on Unity 3D, I learned a lot about C# and engines functionalities. Being the game designer and programmer of this team implied management to create communication and organisation between all my co-workers. That was my first small try on the role of creative director and I really enjoyed it.
This project was the game that gave me the confidence to pursue my studies in a game design master. The social and technical challenge this project created helped me understand a team’s dynamic and that every person in it is an important part that needs to be taken care of. This project gave me the taste of programming and gave me the base I needed to learn and create on the blueprint system of Unreal Engine.
